Position Summary

Precision taping for high-speed, high-frequency cable.

The High-Speed Cable Taping Line Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and maintaining precision taping equipment used in cable manufacturing. The operator controls critical process parameters to ensure products meet electrical, mechanical, dimensional, and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate high-speed cable taping lines according to manufacturing drawings, production travelers, specifications, and work instructions
  • Thread and set up tape, conductors, guides, dies, and payoff/take-up equipment
  • Control tape tension, pitch, overlap, speed, and alignment to maintain consistent, uniform tape coverage
  • Set up and operate single-head and multi-head taping equipment as required
  • Monitor finished cable diameter, concentricity, tape coverage, and dimensional stability
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, and other inspection tools
  • Adjust process parameters during production to maintain tight tolerances
  • Perform spool and reel changes while minimizing downtime and waste
  • Identify and correct taping defects to maintain product quality
  • Accurately complete production travelers, inspection records, and process documentation
  • Maintain material identification and lot traceability throughout production
  • Minimize scrap, setup time, and waste while meeting production targets
  • Perform routine equipment cleaning, inspection, and basic preventive maintenance
  • Communicate equipment, process, and quality issues to Production, Quality, Engineering, or Maintenance
  • Follow all safety procedures and required PPE
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area per 5S/housekeeping standards

High-Speed / RF Cable Quality Responsibilities

The operator must understand that variations in the taping process can directly affect the electrical performance of high-frequency cable.

Critical characteristics may include:

  • Dielectric outside diameter
  • Tape overlap and pitch
  • Dielectric wall thickness
  • Concentricity
  • Cable geometry
  • Capacitance
  • Characteristic impedance
  • Velocity of propagation
  • Insertion loss
  • Return loss
  • Phase stability and skew
  • Mechanical stability of the dielectric structure

Operators are responsible for maintaining established process settings and immediately reporting significant deviations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous cable taping, wire and cable manufacturing, extrusion, braiding, stranding, or precision manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to set up and operate precision rotating manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to read manufacturing drawings, specifications, work instructions, and production travelers.
  • Ability to use micrometers, calipers, diameter gauges, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including diameter, pitch, and tape overlap calculations.
  • Ability to accurately document process settings and inspection results.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while following established manufacturing procedures.

Preferred Experience

Experience manufacturing high-speed data, RF, microwave, coaxial, twinaxial, or other controlled-impedance cables is highly desirable.

Experience working with PTFE, expanded PTFE (ePTFE), polyimide, polyester, fluoropolymer, and other precision dielectric tapes is preferred.

Experience with high-speed rotating taping heads, precision tension-control systems, laser diameter measurement, capacitance measurement, and other inline process-control equipment is a plus.

Physical Requirements

The position requires standing and walking for extended periods and safely handling reels, spools, tape packages, tooling, and cable materials. The operator must be able to perform repetitive equipment setup and production activities and safely lift materials within company-established limits.

Performance Expectations

Performance will be evaluated based on:

SafetyProduct quality and consistencyTape overlap and dimensional controlProduction output and machine utilizationSetup and changeover efficiencyScrap and material yieldEquipment careDocumentation accuracyAdherence to manufacturing proceduresOn-time completion of production orders
